ABOMASAL ULCERS
RUMINALACIDOSISAbomasal Ulcers affect mature dairy and beef cattle after any prolonged stress such as transportation or illness and in feedlot cattle on high concentrate rations. These animals have dark blood clots in their manure or “tarry, black feces.”
Ruminal Acidosis is not one disease, but rather a continuum of degrees of acidosis. Acute Ruminal Acidosis occurs with rapid grain overload and may be fatal or result in severe illness, liver abscesses, etc.
Subacute Ruminal Acidosis (SARA) is a common health and production problem. The major sign is reduced feed intake. Ruminal fluid samples will
show pH below 5.5.
TREATMENT OF ABOMASAL ULCERS AND/OR RUMINAL
ACIDOSISTreatment of Abomasal Ulcers is aimed at correcting dietary problems, reducing stress, etc. Oral antacids and protectants are recommended. Intravenous or oral fluids may be necessary to correct dehydration and metabolic or acid-base disturbances.
Treatment of Ruminal Acidosis varies dependent on the severity of the condition.
Treatment of Acute Ruminal Acidosis is aimed at saving the affected cow’s life. Emptying the rumen and intravenous and oral fluid therapy with lots of antacids are the most important steps.
In case of Subacute Ruminal Acidosis, the likely causes (one or several) must be identified and corrected. When severity of acidosis is reduced, both feed intake and daily gain (or milk production) increase.
