GRASS TETANY/GRASS STAGGERS
(hypomagnesemia)- Can affect stock in late fall, winter and spring
- It happens when cattle are grazing lush, immature grass
- Blood magnesium levels fall below critical level
- Proper nerve impulse transmissions fails, causing tetanic disorder
- Affected cows can be extremely aggressive - so take care!
GRASS TETANY TREATMENT
Treatment must be prompt to be effective.
Magnesium (and calcium) intravenously, however, magnesium is eliminated
within 4-5 hours prompt infusion. Consequently, oral supplement of
bioavailable magnesium is needed as supportive treatment.
