DOWNER COW SYNDROME
(HYPOPHOSPHATEMIA)Some animals developing acute hypophosphatemia do not recover normal blood phosphorus concentration. This is sometimes the case in cows that are classified as “downer cows”. Why these cows are recumbent is essential unknown.
Downer Cow Syndrome often begins as milk fever, but unlike the typical milk fever cow, blood phosphorus remains low in some of these cows despite successful treatment of milk fever.
Effective methods to restore blood phosphorus concentration to normal would help treat and prevent Downer Cow Syndrome.
TREATMENT OF DOWNER COW SYNDROMEPhosphite-containing solutions (oral or intravenously) are incapable of increasing blood phosphorus concentration.
Because the effect of intravenous phosphate is short, most cows will require oral administration of phosphate to achieve more prolonged elevation of
blood phosphorus.
The clinical response of downer cows to intravenous or oral sodium phosphate can be disappointing if not treated early in the course of syndrome.
