INDIGESTION
DYSFUNCTION OF THE FORESTOMACHIndigestion is caused by disturbances in the fermentative process in the rumen.
These disturbances can be divided into two groups:
- Abnormal motor disorders of the rumen wall, e.g., hardware disease,
frothy or free gas bloat, infection or disturbed enervation of forestomach
wall.
- Abnormal fermentative disorders of the forestomach, e.g., inactivity of
rumen microbial flora (caused by poor quality roughage), acute rumen lactic
acidosis, chronic rumen acidosis, rumen alkalosis.
TREATMENT OF INDIGESTION
With exception of penetrating foreign bodies and sporadic infections of the
forestomach wall, indigestions are physiological abnormalities.
Consequently, treating fermentative disorders centers on the restoring of a normal rumen fluid environment that allows normal microbial metabolism.
Principles of treatment
- Adjust feed regimen, correct rumen pH,
- Correct acid-base and electrolyte abnormalities
- Correct rumen fill - Provide oral mineral and vitamin supplementation,
when indigestion and/or anorexia is chronic
